My husband and I have travelled to San Antonio three times. The first time we rented a hotel on the Riverwalk, which was fun. The second time we wanted to rent a B&B close to the Riverwalk action. We chose the Victorian Lady on Howard Street.
The Victorian Lady was a wonderful B&B; large, well furnished rooms with private entrance and jacuzzi, gourmet breakfast. However, it was a little too far to stroll down to the Riverwalk (1 mile). We did find transportation about 2 blocks away, so all and all it was a good experience.
The next time we went we chose the Adams House on Adams Street which is right in the King William neighborhood. Anything in the King William neighborhood is close to the downtown Riverwalk. An ideal location. Many tourists don't realize that the river goes right through this historic neighborhood. I toured the Steven's House on King William Street for $2! It had the most beautiful painted ceilings, and the telephone was so old their phone number was 6!
Accomodations at the Adam's House were outstanding. The room was large with large windows and lacey curtains. The four poster bed was very comfortable. There was an upholstered love seat, table & chairs (cable tv) and ceiling fan all arranged in a spacious room. The attached bathroom had a double jacuzzi in addition to the usual fixtures. One feature that I really enjoyed was the second floor porch that we could use for our private entrance/exit. It had a porch swing.
The breakfasts were absolutely delicious and the hosts were very friendly. Each of the bed and breakfasts cost $20-$30 LESS than the average downtown hotel. I would recommend the Victorian Lady and the Adams House as an alternative to staying on the Riverwalk.
