I suggest the Scenic Overlook to anyone wanting to experience a piece of mind and an elegant stay. Gayle and Allen Steinbecker were the most welcoming and friendly owners, you go once and you will feel like a part of family.

Delightful mountain B&B near Asheville hidden in a national forest

The Inn on Mill Creek is a wonderful family/pet friendly B&B close to Asheville and Black Mt., NC. It is totally secluded in the midst of Pisgah national forest with a lake and waterfall. The innkeepers are warm and welcoming, and the inn is delightful. Breakfast is always wonderful (served in a solarium w/a waterfall and fish pond overlooking the lake), and homemade treats are available in the afternoon. Children especially love the lofts where they can sleep in the lake house rooms. I highly recommend this B&B and hope to visit it again. There are no signs directing guests to Chalet Club, and there is no sign identifying the inn once you arrive. Rather, it is more like arriving at the secluded mountain home of old friends from whom a special invitation has been received.
In the typical manner of an old mountain home, the guest rooms/cabins are not decorated in a designer showcase style or with luxurious appointments. However, everything is spotlessly clean and comfortable;the rooms are like one might expect to find at a beach cottage where relaxation is the main priority.
All meals are served at this B&B, and each is delicious. When the weather permits, breakfast is served on the terrace overlooking a spectacular vista of Chimney Rock and Hickory Nut Gorge below.
An ideal getaway year-round,this is the best place I know in NC to take children as a wide array of fun activities (water sports included) abound. There is even a special ping-pong hut where fountain drinks are self-served that caters to young people.
For over 60 years, The Chalet Club has been in the Washburn family and dedicated to making each guest feel special and cared for. Not only is the mountain setting magnificent (and totally secluded), but the inn itself is an architectural masterpiece. The owners/resident innkeepers are delightful, and Terry is an accomplished chef whose gourmet meals amaze her guests and rival meals in high-end restaurants. The inn has a fully-equipped fitness room which looks like a mini-gym,and a special "shower room" is available for guests to use if they wish to enjoy the hiking trais and property after checking out but before leaving.

This is not a typical B&B as breakfast, lunch, and a gourmet dinner (preceded each evening by delicious appetizers) are included in the room rate. The rustic luxury of this extraordinary inn, along with its other attributes, makes it an inn which has become an all-time favorite of mine as well as a favorite of my husband. I endorse it enthusiastically and definitely plan to return for another visit. We stayed just one night, but wish we could've stayed longer. While it doesn't look like the typical B&B, the place is amazing! The innkeepers are vegetarian, and the food is appealing to even carnivores. The innkeepers accommodate special needs, such as allergies and sensitivities, and they do this while providing a wonderful place to stay. We stayed in a HUGE basement room that could've fit 20 people without a problem! It was equipped with a kitchen and a very nice little bathroom.

The innkeeper Anne has thought of everything!

The room was impeccable. The room was tastefully decorated and had a large, comfy bed. In the corner was a gas-powered fireplace/woodstove. The bathroom was a real treat - a Jacuzzi whirlpool tub and a glass-enclosed shower. It was a big bathroom, too. Lots of room to pad around and get dressed.

We'd had an excruciating drive and when we crawled into bed that night, the scent of lavender drifted up from the pillows. The pillows! What can I say about them? Not too soft, not too hard - perfect! The bed linens were the softest cotton I've ever encountered. But it didn't stop there. The towels were also scented - not overpowering, either. Just hints of something very nice. And soft! The towels were as soft as the sheets.

Also available are big thick robes for guests to use. And if that's not enough, didn't Anne leave an iron, ironing board and hair dryer in each room? She really thought of everything. Each time I needed something and went looking, there it was.

Breakfast is beyond the typical B&B fare. We were treated to Eggs Benedict, but with a bernaise sauce instead of hollandaise. Incredible!

The entire inn is there for the guests' comfort. The kitchen is available for snacks or for guests to cook their dinners. There is a puzzle in the dining area that folks can wander in and try tackling. The porch looks out onto a beautiful view of the mountains. And the sitting area is a vaulted ceiling with floor-to-ceiling windows.

You seriously cannot, and will not, go wrong if you choose to stay here.

Hi! I'm new to the group, so please pardon any mistakes on my part.

I might have an opportunity to visit the Lake Lure area and would love to stay at one of the great B&B's I've seen listed for the area. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I will be traveling with my dog and will need to find someplace for her to stay. She's 10.5 years old, spayed, 9.5 pound Papillon.

I'm sure none of the B&B's accept pets, so are there any good boarding kennels in the area?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Tom grabbed our luggage and showed us to our room, The Mary Elizabeth, before giving us a tour. The inn was full so I was unable to see other guest rooms but our room was just wonderful. Spacious but still cozy and comfortable, with a wood burning fireplace, flanked by two wing back chairs, plenty of current magazines, views of the river, queen size bed, desk and chair and private bath. The armoire held robes and the bath had all the necessary amenities.

Common areas include the living room, dining room, front porch and outdoor areas. Since the property fronts the Watauga River, swimming, tubing and fishing is just steps away.

Tom and Deede enjoy their guests and that is evidenced by the number who keep returning. One couple we met come back every year. In addition to the bottomless cookie jar, additional goodies were laid out during afternoon tea. Deede is a great cook and her southern breakfast was outstanding. I have to say her home made biscuits were the lightest and best we ever had. Breakfast consisted of a fresh fruit cup, a sausage, cheese and egg casserole, with grits and country ham. Those yummy bisquits were served with home made apple butter, strawberry and blackberry jams. Deede and Tom joined us as we all lingered over coffee. Conversation was lively and fun. Tom is very knowledgeable about the history of the house and was able to answer all questions posed to him. Deede is just plain fun and also very helpful about area attractions.

Because of the weather, we did not venture far for dinner and Tom directed us to a nearby bistro which we really enjoyed. It was also recommended that before leaving the area, we stop at the original Mast General Store, about a mile or so away. This mercantile store was busy and fun. There was even a blue grass group playing around the pot-bellied stove while we were there. We agree, it is a must stop in Valle Crucis. http://www.mastgeneralstore.com/

We do recommend the Baird House and the historic Valle Crucis area. For more info, please see: http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/north-carolina-valle-crucis-thebairdhouse.html

Rose Ciccone
Mail To: roseciccone@verizon.net
Associate Editor - BedandBreakfast.com Report
http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/report/Summer-06/index.htm

Contributing Editor - America's Favorite Inn's, B&B's and Small Hotels

Wildberry Lodge, Leicaster

While we usually visit New England each fall this year we set out for western North Carolina to enjoy the fall foliage in the Blue Ridge and Smokey Mountains and we were not disappointed. Throw in a spectacular lodge in a mountain setting with wonderful hosts, Glenda and Ken Cahill, outstanding food and views that go on forever - the vistas from Wildberry Lodge are breathtaking.

Located on a hill at 2700, the lodge is a perfect getaway. Rooms are spacious with comfortable furniture, luxury linens, CD players, spa robes and a nice assortment of bath products to mention a few of the amenities. The beds are extremely comfortable and rooms have good reading lamps. Several rooms have their own decks, all have views.

Glenda and Kens son, Eric, is a culinary student who assists at the inn several nights a week. While we were at the inn, Eric was there for a couple of evenings and prepared evening snacks and desserts that we enjoyed when returning at the end of the day. His rugelach melted in your mouth.

The great room with its massive stone fireplace is ideal for relaxing, reading, playing a board game or chatting with other guests. This room is adjacent to the dining area and the open kitchen. A TV/VCR and sofa are located in the loft along with videos and an assortment of books. You will also find cold drinks and snacks here. If you prefer, the Game Room has a pool table and another TV. Our favorite spot to sit was on the expansive deck and just enjoy the views.

Glenda is an accomplished cook and her breakfasts were wonderful. In addition to an assortment of juices, during our stay we enjoyed broiled grapefruit, steamed eggs on homemade bread, chicken apple sausage, potatoes, praline muffins, pumpkin pancakes, spiral cut ham and apple chutney.

There is so much to do in the area so you do need to leave the lodge. We spent several days just exploring the area and driving through the Smokies.
The lodge and the area was a perfect choice for fall.
Since fall is extremely busy in the mountains, I have to say that Susan handled her full house beautifully. Not a beat was missed and all the guests were very pleased. She plans to add her own personal touches over time but the house and guest rooms are beautifully furnished and for now Susan is making sure all her guests are comfortable and well fed.

When we arrived, we were given a tour of the house and common areas and invited to join the other guests for an afternoon reception in the living room. Wine, cheese and a variety of nibbles were offered as guests chatted about their day and along with Susan made recommendations for dinner. We were pleased that she was able to secure last minute reservations for us at a popular restaurant in Waynesville.

We stayed in the light and airy Montecito room with large shuttered windows separated by bookcases, queen size canopy bed and fireplace. Table and side chairs created a sitting area and there was also an upholstered chair by the fireplace with additional lighting. In addition to the robes we found in the large closet, there was a small refrigerator secluded there that held water and soft drinks. Also offered were fixings for coffee and tea. An extremely comfortable room.

Common areas include the living room, dining room and library as well as the porch and garden; which I understand is magnificent in summer. Since the house sits on a hill many rooms have views of the Blue Ridge Mts.

Breakfast is served in the dining room at a large table with a couple of smaller tables to accommodate the full house. Juice, coffee and tea of course is offered and an apple compote preceded our entre which was a delicious French peasant casserole.

We had dinner in Waynesville at Wildfire extremely popular with local patrons as well as tourists. Several guests dined there more then once during their stay. Even with reservations, there was a slight wait but well worth it.

Great B&B, charming new innkeeper, lovely rooms and good food. We do recommend. More info: http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/north-carolina-waynesville-theyellowhouse.html

Biltmore Village Inn:
One of the closest inns to the Biltmore Estate, this property is set off the main road on several acres. One of the owner/innkeepers, Ripley Hotch, gave me a tour of the inn along with some history. The inn is elegant with 5 rooms, handsomely decorated, offering many amenities. Rooms do have fireplaces and the larger have two, one in the spa bath. A full breakfast is offered as well as afternoon tea and social hour. A guests pantry has a variety of coffee and teas, as well as a refrigerator with soft drinks. I was extremely taken with the first floor suite with its mountain views.

1891 Cedar Crest Inn
Conveniently located on Biltmore Ave but set high on a hill is the beautiful Cedar Crest Inn, a Queen Anne style home with the most magnificent interior woodwork. The guest rooms are beautiful and two have canopy ceilings. The fabrics used are exquisite and functional. Innkeeper Rita Wightman explained that during Victorian times the canopy ceilings were more then decorative, they kept bits of plaster from falling on the occupants of the room. Rita and her husband Bruce share innkeeping duties. Bruce prepares the breakfast, which is served in the dining room or the porch, weather permitting. Save room for the complimentary desserts each evening.

1900 Inn on Montford
This elegant inn is set in the citys lovely residential area. Thursday and Saturday night social hours are enhanced by live music enjoy ragtime and blue grass. There are several common rooms and the guest rooms all have fireplaces, TV/DVD players and wireless LAN connections. Innkeepers Lynn and Ron Carlson recently open the Griffin Cottage, a new carriage house, behind the main house that contains two suites and a luxurious guest room. The rooms must be seen to be appreciated. Rather then try to describe them here, I suggest you visit the web site for details. The whirlpool tubs have lovely settings, one in a 14x1 Spa room, another two adjacent to the French doors that open to a private garden areas. Oh, and the 6x8 steam shower with room for a wet massage table treatment is not to be missed.

1889 WhiteGate Inn & Cottage
Welcoming hosts, award winning restoration, beautiful dcor and gourmet breakfasts what more can you ask for. How about afternoon social hour with cocktails and hor doeuvres served in a beautiful garden setting with waterfalls and gas fire pit to extend the season. Innkeepers, Ralph Coffey and Frank Salvo, are charming hosts who enjoy catering to their guests. Guest rooms are distinctively different in dcor reflecting several period styles. Orchids and other plants from the expansive greenhouse can be found throughout the house. The inn has also won two separate garden awards for landscaping and water garden. Common areas include the living room with player baby grand piano, solarium where you can find baked goodies during the day and the dining room with its elegant table settings.

While in Asheville we dined at Bistro 1896 located on historic Pack Square. Creative American cuisine with a nice wine list. Super salad selections
http://www.bistro1896.com/
Another evening after returning from the Smokey Mts. National Park, we opted for a small trattoria near the Biltmore estate. Amicis was a wonderful find. Home style Italian fare in a casual Tuscan open kitchen setting. We were very impressed with the menu, presentation and quality of the food. Great dinner and engaging chef who took time to chat with us when we discovered his extensive background.
